How to Get Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Arunachal Pradesh

Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Arunachal Pradesh

The Northeast states have security concerns due to the shared borders with other countries. Especially the states that share the borders with not-so-friendly countries. Arunachal Pradesh is one such State where the security precautions are taken higher than the other states.

The northern border of Arunachal Pradesh touches China, which has a history of war with India. Years after the war, the Chinese troops still kept entering the Indian territory and laying claims. Due to this ongoing conflict and border disputes, every traveler entering Arunachal Pradesh needs to acquire a permit.

Types of Permits

To enter and travel within Arunachal Pradesh, Indian citizens require an Inner Line Permit (ILP). A foreigner requires a Protected Area Permit (PAP). If you are a foreigner reading this blog, I would recommend reading this blog post which talks about getting a PAP. If you are an Indian, continue reading as I will share the process of getting an ILP in this blog post.

How to Get the Inner Line Permit for Arunachal Pradesh

Surprisingly, it is very easy if you are getting it online. Unless you randomly decide to visit Arunachal Pradesh because you were passing by, I would really recommend getting the permit online. I have never seen a government process as hassle-free as this one.

In order to get the permit online, you just need to visit the official website. On the top right, you will see “Apply eILP”. Once you land on that page, you will see the simple steps to apply for the ILP.  You would require any one of the identity documents out as a passport, voter’s ID, driving license, or PAN card. Aadhar card would also work.

In addition, you would require a passport-size photo. You need to upload the soft copy. Now, the passport-size photo doesn’t need to be a professional one. A clear selfie with a whitish background will do. I would recommend uploading an identity document that contains your address proof. If you are traveling in a group, only one ID is required, but you would require photos of all the traveling members.

In the application form, there is one field that confused me. It asks for a local reference. However, it doesn’t necessarily have to be a local who resides in Arunachal Pradesh. Any reference would do, even your friend’s.

Now while applying for the permit, you will have to enter the districts that you intend to visit. My itinerary was not fixed, hence I entered all the districts and got a permit for each. My application went through without any issues and I got the permit for all the districts.

In case your application gets rejected, you can instantly apply for another one. Also, you get to know the reason of rejection so it can be solved pretty easily. I got my ILP application rejected the first time due to an unclear photo.

Getting Arunachal Pradesh ILP Offline

In order to get Arunachal Pradesh ILP offline, you need to visit a Deputy commissioner’s office in a city or consult an ILP facilitation center at the entry points. Another option is going through a travel agent. But middlemen always cost you more. You need to submit the same documents and a passport-size photo that is required to get ILP online.

The ILP facilitation centers are present at Naharlagun Railway Station, Gumto Railway Station, and Guwahati LGBI Airport. You can visit Guwahati Asom Paryatan Bhawan, which is located near the Nepali Mandir.

If you want to directly visit a Deputy commissioner’s office and get the ILP, you can visit either of the below-mentioned cities:

Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Shillong, Tezpur, Dibrugarh, North Lakhimpur, Jorhat, and all the DC offices of Arunachal Pradesh.

But, as I said earlier, I would really recommend getting the ILP online. It takes 4-5 working hours for them to issue the ILP permit online. If you want ILP offline, you might not get it on the same day of application.  The ILP would cost around Rs 100, whether it is online or offline.
