A Kick Ass New Zealand Itinerary for 15 Days

New Zealand is a country which I hold very close to my heart. I visited my New Zealand for my honeymoon and had a really great time exploring the various sights and experiences that this beautiful country has to provide.

Along with New Zealand, we also visited the exotic country of Fiji. But more to Fiji in a separate blog post.

About New Zealand

New Zealand is a paradise. Well, at-least for nature & adventure lovers like me. This beautiful country can be categorized in two main parts; North & South island.

The North island is where Auckland is located, which is a major hub for international flights. For South Island, the major connectivity is from Christchurch or Queenstown.

In case you want to decide which are the best flights to book you check out this compilation of important travel tips before visiting New Zealand.

Detailed New Zealand Itinerary

Here we go with the itinerary. Our excitement had no bounds, here I share my experiences sorted in an itinerary format which you consider while planning your New Zealand itinerary.

Day 0 – Land in Auckland

I headed from North to South. Hence, this itinerary starts in Auckland, a major city in North New Zealand.

On Day 0, there’s not much planned for you. Obviously, we need to start soaking in the beautiful country first!

A quiet check in at one of the Airport Hotels would be ideal after a long flight.

Where to stay in Auckland

I had stayed at Holiday Inn near Auckland Airport. It’s had a very cozy room and it served our sole purpose well; catching a good night’s sleep.

The cost of Holiday Inn was $125 per night (INR 10,000) which is tad expensive, but we didn’t want to risk staying in a lesser known hotel for our first night of this New Zealand itinerary.

Some other good hotel options, around the Airport, are Ibis Hotel or Heartland Hotel. You can feel free to browse online and select the hotel that suits your need the most. But because Auckland is more of a stop over, make sure you are choosing the hotel close to the Airport.

Not a lot of agenda today.

Just visit some nice cafes & restaurants. Auckland is very wide spread, so apart from the specific markets or malls, it’s not a walking city like the European ones. In fact, none of the cities covered in this New Zealand itinerary are walking cities, barring a few areas.

While in Auckland, you can consider visiting many local attractions. The city is rife with cafes and restaurants that you’ll love. Auckland is also home to a few adventure activities. But, I’d defer the adventure activities to the South Island.

After a day of relaxation and planning the next leg of your trip, you can pay a visit to either of two beaches, Muriwai beach or Piha beach. We visited Muriwai Beach and had a great time! The thousands of birds flocking above us with a shimmering sunset in the distance made our day.

Read moreA visit to Muriwai Beach, a gorgeous sunset and a 1000 birds!

What we did on Day 1 was a mistake. So I wouldn’t recommend it.

What was our mistake? We headed out on a round trip to Coramandel peninsula. It took us 5-6 hours to cover the entire stretch. We visited Muriwai Beach after that.

On first day of our trip, we had 8 hours of driving under our belt! You can imagine how tired we were. It was a mistake to club Coramandel Peninsula & Muriwai Beach on the first day. But out of sheer excitement, we did it!

Coramandel peninsula can be skipped out of your New Zealand trip. There’s nothing great there which I consider as a must do. We visited it, but you can give a skip.

Day 2 – Road trip to Rotorua via Hobbinton

I believe that the best of North New Zealand is around Rotorua. I like to call Rotorua as the ‘Cauldron of the world’ because of the many geothermal attractions there. But before we reach the beautiful town of Rotorua, you can drive through Hobbinton, the set where the famous ‘Hobbit’ movie was shot.

Your experience at the Hobbinton can take around 2 hours, so plan accordingly. You will be given a tour of this impeccable set up and would get a chance to admire the shooting locations of Hobbit movie. Along with Hobbit movie series, the Lord of the Rings movie series was also extensively shot in New Zealand. In fact, New Zealand has a dedicated Lord of the Rings minister who is responsible to promote travel ideas around the movie. You might love my post on 5 iconic movie locations to visit on a New Zealand Trip.

Where to Stay at Rotorua

After reaching Rotorua, you can just relax at one of the many lakeside Airbnbs. We stayed at a lake house which we found on Airbnb. You can also read the reviews and see if you like it – Shula’s Lake House. Try to catch my review on the Airbnb listing.

The hosts were nice and they cooked very good breakfast. They just didn’t give us any choice in breakfast, which was a bit disappointing. Not that we were very demanding. We just asked the breakfast given to us on 1st day to be repeated. But our request was brutally denied. Haha! But no hard feelings. Overall it was a great stay experience.

Shula's Lakehouse Rotorua

There are many similar homestays around the lake and would give you beautiful sunrise & sunset viewpoints.

Day 3 – Relax at Rotorua, Visit to Thermal parks & Polynesian Spa

On this day, you can relax a bit in the morning. Shula’s lake house provides amazing views of the front yard lake in the morning. You can enjoy a relaxed breakfast and in the afternoon, you can head for the thermal parks.

Due to the many thermal parks and geothermal activities in Rotorua, I like to call this city ‘Cauldron of the world’

Today, you can visit either of the two thermal parks; Wai – O – Tapo Thermal park or Hell’s Gate thermal park. My personal recommendation would be Wai-O-Tapo Thermal Park. Only due to the highlight of the thermal park; the Champagne pool.

The experience of admiring the colorful lake is just enthralling! I have written a dedicated post Rotorua. You can read it below:

After visiting the thermal parks, you can consider a trip to Polynesian Spa. It’s a beautiful experience and you would just love their Spa offerings. They have plenty of options and we spent an amazing 30 minutes in a sulphur spa overlooking the beautiful Rotorua Lake. You can read more about it in my Rotorua blog post mentioned above.

Polynesian Spa Rotorua

Day 4 – Visit to Taupo Lake OR Waitomo Caves + Zorbing

On this day, you can consider going for a short day trip from Rotorua. You can pick from either Taupo Lake or Waitomo Caves.

Taupo Lake is the largest lake in New Zealand and it is so big that the 2nd largest lake is not even half of it! Through out your New Zealand itinerary, you will be witnessing a lot of lakes. So I would rather recommend trip to Waitomo Caves instead.

In the Waitomo caves, you will get a chance to admire the beautiful caves which sparkle in darkness! Due to the glow worms in the caves, adhering to the rooftop, the caves glow! You will be given a trip in the caves in a raft which makes a great way to see the glow worms adorning the ceilings and walls of the caves. This is a very unique experience in New Zealand itinerary.

The distance from Rotorua city to Taupo Lake is around 1 hour while it takes around 2 hours to reach Waitomo caves.

I’d advice you to head out early for them as it would be great if you make it back to Rotorua city before 5 pm.

If you do, you will be able to enjoy a very unique experience in Rotorua, Zorbing! A very fun activity, Zorbing basically wraps you up in a giant bubble and you will roll down a mountainous slope! This adventure activity is famous across the globe, but the folks here at Rotorua are the ones that invented Zorbing. Hence it would be a fantastic experience to enjoy the adventure activity right at its birthplace!

Unfortunately, this entire day was missing form our itinerary. The reason is that we had earlier planned to spend more time in North Island of New Zealand, but instead we headed to Fiji! More about Fiji in a separate blog post.

You might love my post on top three fun pastimes to do in New Zealand.

Day 5 – Flight to Christchurch & Road trip to Arthur’s pass

On this day, we cross the mid point of the country and land in South Africa.

Now you may think, in this 15 day New Zealand itinerary, why are only 5 days dedicated to North island? Well, it’s because the South Island is much more kick – ass!

Don’t believe me? Well you just might after completing this South Island part of New Zealand itinerary.

Now there are two ways of starting your South Island trip

  1. Start from Queenstown and end at Christchurch
  2. Start from Christchurch and end at Queenstown

We decided to start from Christchurch and then end at Queenstown.

Now instead of driving from Rotorua to Christchurch by taking the ferry at Wellington, we just took a flight! The fun fact is that we paid similar to what we would have paid if we rented a car.

Given that we were again renting a car at Christchurch and then would drive all the way to Queenstown, choosing a flight from Rotorua to Christchurch seemed like the best choice for us.

Maybe we didn’t see that stretch by driving, but it was worth it, given how convenient the flight was and we were totally ready to drive from Christchurch on-wards.

From Christchurch, we picked up a car which we had already booked on Rentalcars.com, and headed straight to Arthur’s Pass. The landscape was getting better and better as we approached Arthur’s pass. This New Zealand itinerary was surprising us at almost every turn!

For more details about Arthur’s Pass, you can read this Blog post – Arthur’s Pass & Fox Town – Exploring New Zealand’s countryside

The above blog post covers the next stop in this New Zealand itinerary as well.

Finally, we reached our beautiful homestay – The Loft at Bealey’s. It is an extention of a hotel with the same name. The experience of staying here was pretty average. For INR 10,000, we got a small room and it was right on the highway. So frequent cars passing at high speed disturbed a bit. But we were so tired that we didn’t quite care.

Staying at Arthur’s Pass

However given that there are very few options of homestay around Arthur’s pass, it was not that bad. Also the fact that this was just a stop over to break the long journey from Christchurch to Fox Glacier, helped us to be happy with this somewhat mediocre stay.

Just a heads up, even after paying a high price, this place doesn’t have any staff or any service what so ever. You are expected to clean your own plates and leave your room same as when it was when you entered.

I have stayed in many Airbnbs and nowhere I saw such a complete lack of service. So make your decision accordingly. Unfortunately, the host didn’t like a lot as we didn’t do the dishes. I didn’t notice that while reading the homestay policies. I agree it’s my bad. The negative review did embarrass me a little.

Some alternate routes

Now, to reach Queenstown from Christchurch there are 3 routes

  1. Christchurch – Arthur’s Pass – Fox Glacier – Wanaka – Queenstown
  2. Christchurch – Lake Tekapo – Wanaka – Queenstown
  3. Christchurch – Oamaru – Dunedin – Queenstown

The 2nd route is the shortest. But the other two routes have much more to offer.

We opted for the 1st route as it gives a very exciting landscape which changes rapidly. It also gets you an opportunity to see Fox Glacier, which is one of the lowest glaciers in the world, from an altitude stand point. Skydiving over this Fox Glacier can leave one spellbound. That was the reason we included this route in our New Zealand itinerary. It really gave us an experience of New Zealand’s countryside. We saw lakes, mountains, glaciers and many beautiful sites. However, our plan of skydiving over Fox glacier was spoiled by the weather. But still this route was worth it!

The 2nd route will have the beautiful Lake Tekapo as hero. The beautiful Lake and the purple Lupin flowers offer bountiful views to admire. A slight detour and you can reach Wanaka which is situated near a lake and small – mid mountains surround the same beautifully. Wanaka can be covered in 1st route as well, without any detour. We didn’t take this route and missed Lake Tekapo. But the Lake Wakatipu which accompanies you from just before Wanaka to Queenstown, gave us drop dead gorgeous views!

The 3rd route will take you to the surfing cities of Oamaru & Dunedin. This route is more about the coastal road and less about a mixed landscape. Also, not being an avid surfer, this route didn’t excite us that much.

When I visit New Zealand again, which I most certainly will, I will combine Route 2 & 3 by taking some detours here and there. I’m sure it will be worth. But if you are a first time visitor, I believe you should definitely consider Route No. 1.

If I had one more day, I would have definitely tried to cover Lake Tekapo in my New Zealand itinerary. But including it in our current itinerary for New Zealand would have left us completely exhausted!

Day 6 – Drive from Arthur’s Pass to Fox Glacier

We leave from Arthur’s pass today and head towards Fox Glacier. The drive from Arthur’s Pass to Fox Glacier is only 138 KMs, so it’s a pretty relaxing day for you. Just cruise along the highway and take stops as you wish.

There are a few attractions that you can consider visiting before reaching Fox Glacier; like Devil’s Punch bowl waterfall or Avalanche creek.

Arthur’s pass national park

You can stop in between to click few pics around Arthur’s Pass and enjoy the views.

Beautiful roads near Fox Glacier

While driving to Fox Glacier, keep an eye on cute roadside cafes. Before you reach Fox Glacier, you will pass through Franz Josef town. If you are considering skydiving over Fox Glacier, you will have to book your skydive at Franz Josef. So, have a stop over at the Franz Josef & Fox Glacier Skydive Zone. You can check their activities and figure out if the weather is suitable for the skydive during your stay.

Day 7 – Relax at Fox Glacier & Skydive

Today, you can just relax at Fox Glacier and plan for skydiving above a beautiful landscape. Please try and get a morning slot as the weather is generally better. In evening, the weather gets a bit choppy at times.

For us, a storm engulfed the enchanting landscape of fox glacier and we were completely helpless due to the incessant rains. We just spent our entire day at our lodge, admiring the vivid rains and dark clouds passing over Fox Glacier.

Our Stay at Fox Glacier – Lake Matheson Motel
Far behind the clouds the beautiful Fox Glacier is hidden

We weren’t able to enjoy skydiving due to the weather. In fact, the next day also the weather wasn’t the best. Eventually, we did skydiving at Glenorchy near Queenstown. More on that later in this New Zealand itinerary.

If you do get an opportunity to skydive over Fox Glacier, I have a tip for you. There are three options to skydive here from height perspective; 13K, 16.5K and 20K. Now the 20K height is the highest one I have seen across multiple skydive zones. So, it’s very tempting.

But there are two issues. One is that this height requires you to jump with oxygen support, which makes you heavier. Also for an additional 20 seconds of free fall, you will pay 200 NZD extra! However, keep an eye on bookme.co.nz for this and all other activities and you may find some good discounts.

We just opted for 16.5K due to this and I’d recommend the same to you. Though we didn’t jump at Fox Glacier, we did jump at Glenorchy from 15K feet.

Where to stay in Fox Glacier

In Fox Glacier, Airbnbs are a bit limited. Whatever we found, we weren’t sure. So we decided to go with one of the few motels available on Makemytrip & Booking.com

We stayed at Lake Matheson motel. In the same area, there are many other motels offering similar value at similar price range. You can check Heartland hotel, Fox Glacier lodge and Mt Cook view motel as well. There are a few very high price range hotels as well. But any of these motels would be more than enough. Our stay at Lake Matheson Motel was very satisfactory.

Day 8 – Visiting Attractions in Fox Glacier

After an awesome skydive experience, you may indulge yourself in some laid back sightseeing. There are a few adventurous experiences around Fox glacier like helicopter rides, glacier trekking, quad biking and more.

If you are interested in just visiting sight worthy attractions, you can consider visiting Lake Matheson.

However, be wary that to see Lake Matheson, you need to hike for a while and this activity might take half of your day. The entire circuit is 2.6 KM long and it might take a couple of hours for you. There are shorter trails as well. You can check out the details here.

Apart from Lake Matheson, you can consider visiting Gillespies Beach as well. A calm rocky beach, you can spend a relaxed evening here.

Day 9 – Drive from Fox Glacier to Wanaka

Today we leave from Fox Glacier to Wanaka.

You can actually stretch till Queenstown by adding 1-1.5 hours to your drive. But located some 3 hours away from Fox glacier, Wanaka is one of the most underrated destinations in South New Zealand. Try and make it a part of your New Zealand itinerary, no matter which route you take.

If nothing, come to Wanaka from Queenstown for a nice half day outing. The distance between Queenstown and Wanaka is only 68 KMs.

Wanaka is not only a very beautiful destination, but also the stretch of road from Fox Glacier to Wanaka offers bountiful views of Lake Wanaka & Lake Hawea. For a good half an hour of this road trip, both this lake will keep you company on either side of the road and the views will keep getting better and better as you approach Wanaka town. The sheer beauty of this stretch of road trip made our New Zealand itinerary much better.

The beautiful Lake Wanaka from a high road
Random viewpoints keep you company through out!

If you ask me, the stretch from Fox Glacier to Queenstown via Wanaka was the highlight of our New Zealand itinerary if we talk about only road trips. Overall, driving on this route is in our top 10 experiences in New Zealand! On this stretch, you’ll see jaw dropping views of Lake Wanaka, Lake Hawea and Lake Wakatipu. The last one will keep you company all the way till Queenstown.

Where to stay in Wanaka

You should definitely stay in Airbnbs in Wanaka. There are plentiful Airbnbs here and most of them are located in spectacular locations. We stayed at a private room hosted by Ellen and Andi in their house. The room was on the ground floor, but we had access to the living room upstairs and it came along with a spectacular view!

Our Airbnb in Wanaka

You can have a look at the Airbnb listing here – Wanaka Lake View Private Room (Red)

The hosts, Ellen & Andi are both very good people and they took good care for us. I had gotten a negative review for not being the best guest at our Arthur’s pass Airbnb. So I was extra careful here. Luckily, I got a good review here, haha.

Anyway, Ellen & Andi are both super hosts, having amassed more than 120 positive reviews on their Airbnb listing. I’d definitely recommend staying here during your visit to Wanaka as part of your New Zealand itinerary.

Day 10 – Relax at Wanaka, local sightseeing

Wanaka is located by the Lake Wanaka. So you have ample of view points around the town. But if we talk about some prime attractions to visit in Wanaka or sights to behold, you can consider doing some famous walks such as Roy’s peak trek, Rob Roy Glacier trek or a shorter Mt Iron trek.

If you are an adventure enthusiast, you may find many activities here like Paragliding, canyoning, waterfall trekking and of course, skydiving. Wanaka is also considered to be one of the most beautiful skydive sites in New Zealand. But, I’d still recommend Fox Glacier or Glenorchy over Wanaka for Skydiving. So, you may consider doing the waterfall trekking with Wildfire Wanaka – World’s highest waterfall cable climb. It’s a unique experience only available in Wanaka.

At night, try finding a quiet spot and indulging in some star gazing or night photography. Wanaka offers really clear sky at nights when the weather is not bad. We had a cloudy weather when we were in Wanaka as a part of our New Zealand itinerary. So could see the stars only in batches.

Day 11 – Drive from to Wanaka to Queenstown via Lake Tekapo

While returning form Lake Tekapo, the road to Queenstown gives you ravishing scenes of Lake Wakatipu. Along with this, multiple sights and stop worthy views will keep you engaged through out. This Lake Wakatipu will keep you company throughout rest of your trip now as Queenstown is located near this lake.

Day 12 – Relax in Queenstown & visit Local Attractions

Frankly, Queenstown is all about experiences! You can not have enough of adventure activities in Queenstown. But when you are exploring Queenstown local, you can consider visiting some famous food outlets like The Cow Pizza, Fergburger and Cookie Time. You can also chill at the Lake Wakatipu which pretty much never leaves your side if you are in Queenstown.

The best way to plan these last few days would be by referring to my detailed Queenstown Itinerary which would cover today and next 3 days in detail.

Day 13 – Milford Sound Cruise & Skyline Luge ride experience

When we reached Milford Sound, it just blew our minds away! When we were there in New Zealand, there were a few cyclones in the South area and we didn’t have the option of visiting Milford Sound by Road. We had to take a flight which was twice as expensive but took 10% of the drive time. Milford Sound is a must do experience when you are visiting New Zealand.

Milford Sound

More details about Milford Sound can be found here – Milford Sound, A Blissful place!

In Queenstown, one of the most unique activities is the Luge ride. You don’t only get amazing views from the top, but also get to race down the slopes in really cool vehicles! You can cover Milford Sound & Luge ride in one day very comfortably.

Queenstown Luge Ride

Day 14 – Skydiving at Glenorchy (Buffer Day)

Skydiving at Glenorchy is crazy! It presents an amazing view of the Lake Wakapitu below and the surrounding scenery is actually overwhelming! As per me, Glenorchy is one of the top skydiving sites in New Zealand! More details around this is mentioned in my Queenstown Itinerary mentioned above.

Here’s a short video of my experience.

Day 15 – Bungy Jumping & Swing experience at Nevis

Oh what can be a better way to end your New Zealand trip then to jump off a ledge standing at a height of 134 meters! The thrill of bungy jumping cannot be compared to any other adventure! The abrupt fall would definitely stop your heart for a second or two. At the Bungy jump site, you have an option of Swing also. It is less frightening because you don’t have to jump yourself. But still an exhilarating ride. My Queenstown itinerary talks more about this in detail. Check it out! Meanwhile you can see our videos of Bungy jumping and Giant Swing below

Crafting the Kiwi Dream: What Makes the Best New Zealand Itinerary?

Beautiful New Zealand, the “Land of the Long White Cloud,” beckons with its dramatic landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and vibrant Maori culture. But crafting the perfect New Zealand itinerary for this island nation can feel daunting. Fear not, intrepid traveller! The key lies in understanding what makes your ideal New Zealand experience. Here’s a roadmap to designing a travel itinerary NZ that captures your heart:

1. Know Yourself, Know New Zealand

More than anyone, you know you and your partner well. So, based on your interests, you can include different places in your travel itinerary New Zealand. Here are some ideas to plan your itinerary of New Zealand.

  • Adventure Seeker: Do heart-pounding bungee jumps in Queenstown, kayak Milford Sound’s fjords, or hike the challenging Routeburn Track.
  • Nature Lover: Immerse yourself in Tongariro National Park’s volcanic wonders, marvel at the glowworms in Waitomo Caves, or cruise Doubtful Sound, teeming with wildlife.
  • Culture Buff: Delve into Maori traditions at Rotorua’s cultural villages, explore Dunedin’s Scottish heritage, or witness a Haka performed by passionate locals.
  • Foodie Paradise: Savor fresh seafood in Napier, indulge in Wellington’s craft beer scene, or embark on a wine trail tour in Marlborough.

My Post on travel resources to New Zealand might help you.

2. Time & Travel Style

  • Duration: A week lets you explore one island, while 2-3 weeks allow you to experience both. Factor in travel time between regions in Beautiful New Zealand.
  • Pace: Do you prefer whirlwind adventure or leisurely exploration? Plan activities and rest days accordingly.
  • Transport: Buses, trains, and rental cars offer flexibility. Consider scenic train journeys in your New Zealand itinerary like the TranzAlpine for an unforgettable experience.

3. Must-Sees & Hidden Gems

  • Iconic landmarks: Don’t miss the geothermal wonders of Rotorua, the Waitomo Caves, or the stunning Milford Sound.
  • Off the beaten path: Seek out the quirky charm of Hokitika, the otherworldly landscapes of Punakaiki Pancake Rocks, or the secluded beauty of Fiordland National Park.

4. Consider the Seasons

  • Summer (Dec-Feb): Warm weather, long days, ideal for outdoor activities. Expect crowds and higher prices when your travel itinerary NZ falls in the summer.
  • Autumn (Mar-May): Vibrant foliage, comfortable temperatures, fewer crowds. If you love fewer crowds, you can plan your travel itinerary New Zealand during Autumn.

  • Winter (Jun-Aug): Skiing in the Southern Alps, cosy fireplace evenings, a chance for snow in lower areas.
  • Spring (Sep-Nov): Wildflowers bloom, pleasant weather, good balance between crowds and prices. Most people love to have their itinerary of New Zealand during this season.

5. Personalize Your Adventure:

  • Theme your trip: Focus on Maori culture, adventure sports, wine tasting, or Lord of the Rings filming locations.
  • Unique experiences: Take a Maori cooking class, go stargazing in Aoraki Mackenzie, or visit a sheep farm in beautiful New Zealand.
  • Special interests: Include activities that cater to your hobbies, like wildlife watching, photography, or geothermal exploration in your New Zealand itinerary.

Remember:

  • Flexibility is key: Be open to adjustments based on weather, road closures, or spontaneous opportunities. Plan your travel itinerary NZ accordingly.
  • Respect the environment: Leave no trace, adhere to local regulations, and appreciate the fragile beauty of New Zealand.
  • Embrace the unexpected: Sometimes the best memories come from unplanned detours and serendipitous encounters.
