I’ll be honest – before visiting Arunachal Pradesh, I thought getting around would be a nightmare. But here’s what surprised me: the state actually has decent connectivity, and you can easily travel using local and shared transportation. The government has identified 12 tourist routes where buses and shared sumos run regularly. Let me walk you through my actual experience with Arunachal Pradesh transport, including all the costs and practical details you’ll need.
| Quick Facts | Details |
|---|---|
| Main Entry Points | Guwahati/Tezpur (western routes), Itanagar (eastern routes) |
| Transport Options | Local buses, shared sumos, private taxis |
| My Total Transport Cost | Rs. 2,320 for entire trip |
| Best Time | March to October (weather dependent) |
How to Reach Arunachal Pradesh: Choosing Your Entry Point
Your entry point depends entirely on which route you’re taking. For western routes covering Tawang and Ziro valley, Guwahati or Tezpur works perfectly as your starting point. If you’re heading to eastern routes, Itanagar is your best bet. Since I was planning to visit Tawang, I chose the Guwahati to Tawang transport route.
Guwahati to Tezpur to Bomdila Route
Now, there’s a direct bus from Guwahati to Bomdila, but honestly, reaching Tawang in one day from Guwahati is tough. It’s not really possible using local or shared transport, though you might manage it with a personal vehicle (still not recommended).
I didn’t get the direct bus from Guwahati to Bomdila, so I broke the journey into two parts. First, I took a bus from Guwahati to Tezpur for Rs. 200, then caught a shared sumo from Tezpur to Bomdila for Rs. 500. The Guwahati to Tezpur bus took about 5 hours. From there, I reached Bomdila in 8 hours, though it usually takes 6 – there was construction work causing delays.
Here’s something to keep in mind: there are sumos that go directly from Tezpur to Tawang in one day, but they start very early. Since I reached Tezpur at 11 AM, I’d already missed them.
Bomdila to Tawang via Dirang
From Bomdila, you have two options for reaching Tawang. There’s a local bus starting at 5:30 AM costing around Rs. 300, and shared sumos starting around 6 AM for Rs. 500. The sumo takes about 8 hours while the bus can stretch to 10 hours. You’ll cross the famous Sela Pass at 13,700 feet – it’s usually covered in snow, so weather plays a huge role in timing.
Now, about stopping in Dirang – it’s 130 km away from Tawang and cuts about 3 hours from your journey. But honestly? Skip it if you can. The Bomdila to Dirang road is smooth, so going directly from Bomdila to Tawang in one go is totally manageable. Plus, I wasn’t impressed with Dirang – lots of construction, not much to see.
Here’s the math: Bomdila to Dirang cost me Rs. 150, then Dirang to Tawang was Rs. 500. So I spent Rs. 650 total, plus Rs. 450 for a night’s stay in Dirang. If I’d gone directly from Bomdila to Tawang, it would’ve been just Rs. 500. Learn from my mistake!
Tawang to Zemithang: The Offbeat Route
Here’s where things get interesting. Zemithang isn’t on the regular tourist route – none of the tour packages include it. This little town tucked between Bhutan and China is relatively untouched, which is exactly why I wanted to visit. I took the bus since I had time and shared sumos were scarce on this route, though you can still find them for Rs. 300.
The Zemithang bus starts around 11 AM (no need for an early start since the road isn’t too challenging). It took 6 hours and cost Rs. 170. There’s also a bus to Bleteng, even closer to the Bhutan border, for the same fare and timing.
One important heads-up: there’s only one bus for the Tawang to Zemithang route, and it goes for maintenance usually on Tuesday or Wednesday (though this can change based on bus and road conditions). You only find out the next day’s schedule by checking at Tawang bus stop’s ticketing counter. Same applies for Bleteng.
If you’re planning a broader trip to Arunachal Pradesh, this transport information will help you budget and plan better.
My Complete Transportation Cost Breakdown
The local and shared transportation cost was quite reasonable. Here’s exactly what I spent on local transport (whenever I mention Sumo, it’s the shared ones that ply regular routes):
Guwahati to Tezpur (Bus): Rs. 200
Tezpur to Bomdila (Sumo): Rs. 500
Bomdila to Dirang (Sumo): Rs. 150
Dirang to Tawang (Sumo): Rs. 500
Tawang to Zemithang (Bus): Rs. 170
Zemithang to Lumla (Sumo): Rs. 150
Lumla to Tawang (Sumo): Rs. 150
Tawang to Bomdila (Sumo): Rs. 500
Bomdila to Itanagar via Guwahati (Bus): Rs. 300
Total spent on intercity transportation: Rs. 2,520
This doesn’t include local sightseeing transport. For instance, my day trip to Bum La Pass and Madhuri Lake from Tawang cost Rs. 1,500 shared among 5 people. If I’d hired the entire sumo for myself, it would’ve been around Rs. 5,000 – the joys of solo backpacking in Arunachal Pradesh!
Distance Guide for Major Routes
Let me share some key distances that’ll help you plan:
The Itanagar to Bomdila distance is about 150 km, taking roughly 5-6 hours by road. For Itanagar to Dirang distance, you’re looking at around 280 km. The Bomdila to Dirang distance is just 130 km, while Tawang to Bomdila distance is 180 km.
If you’re coming from Tezpur, the Tezpur to Bomdila distance is approximately 150 km. From Guwahati, you can reach Tawang covering 511 km, though there’s another route that’s about 433 km.
For those specifically looking for Tawang to Tezpur sumo counter number or Bomdila sumo counter number, your best bet is to ask locally at the bus stations or check with your accommodation – these numbers change frequently.

Practical Tips for Arunachal Transport
Based on my experience, here are some things to keep in mind. Weather in the mountains changes fast, so always check forecasts and be prepared for delays. Public transport schedules can be flexible here – factor in extra time for your journeys.
Don’t expect luxury if you’re using local or shared transport. Sometimes my shared sumos were so cramped I couldn’t keep my head straight in the corner seat. Thankfully, the sumos here have front-facing last rows, not side seats, or it would’ve been worse!
Before you travel, make sure you have your Inner Line Permit sorted – it’s mandatory for visiting Arunachal Pradesh.
Alternative Transportation Options
While I focused on buses and shared sumos, there are other options. You can hire private taxis, though they’re significantly more expensive. Some routes also have helicopter services, but that’s way beyond the budget travel scope.
The Bomdila to Tawang bus service is regular and reliable, running daily except during extreme weather. For longer journeys, I’d recommend booking accommodation in advance, especially in smaller towns like Dirang or Zemithang where options are limited.
How far is Itanagar from Bomdila?
The Itanagar to Bomdila distance is approximately 150 km, which takes about 5-6 hours by road depending on traffic and road conditions.
What’s the distance between Bomdila and Dirang?
The Bomdila to Dirang distance is around 130 km. It’s about a 3-4 hour journey by shared sumo, and the road is relatively smooth.
How can I travel from Guwahati to Tawang using public transport?
For Guwahati to Tawang transport, take a bus from Guwahati to Tezpur (Rs. 200, 5 hours), then a shared sumo to Bomdila (Rs. 500, 6-8 hours), and finally another sumo to Tawang (Rs. 500, 8 hours).
Are there sumo counter contact numbers for booking?
For Tawang sumo counter number or Bomdila sumo counter number, it’s best to inquire locally at bus stations or your accommodation, as these numbers change frequently and booking is usually done in person.
How much does it cost to travel by shared sumo in Arunachal Pradesh?
Shared sumo fares vary by distance: short routes like Bomdila to Dirang cost Rs. 150, while longer ones like Tezpur to Bomdila or Bomdila to Tawang cost Rs. 500 each.

What I found was how difficult it was for a foreigner to get a SIM Indian number in Guwahati. Apparently. It’s a security issue like kashmire. I had to get an Indian to be my nominator and use his mobile number. P urely by luck I found an Indian. I am too certain whether if the same goes for Delhi. I had no problems in 4 previous visits to Delhi martin

Umang, greeting from NYC! Just read your piece on public transportation in AP and really has inspired me as this was the big question, how to get around. I have traveled extensively in India and have always wanted to travel to the NEast. Question for you, if I am seeking big dramatic landscapes, more remote off the beaten path, more of an “adventure, ” would you select Sikkim or Arunachal Pradesh? Please let me know as heading there in late October. Keep on Traveling!! Scott Stone
