The smell of Dhoklas, the refreshing ‘non-alcoholic’ drinks, lavishly dressed women, men discussing stocks, shlok chanting pandits, Super-excited kids, Super-bored teenagers and the anxious couple. Welcome to the scene of “The Great Gujju Wedding”!!
Before presenting you the virtual tour of the wedding, let me give credits to my younger brother, Hardik Trivedi, for providing me time & space to observe the wedding. Thanks for carrying around my notebook and pen bro. J
For me, “Gujju” weddings have always been a boring affair. Only the lunch and dinner apparently allow me to oblige to my parents, asking me to accompany them to a wedding. However, this being my cousin’s wedding, inaugurated high level of interest and enthusiasm in me. Thanks to my realization that there are other ‘attractions’ in wedding along with good food.
So, it was 15th Feb when my cousin was forbidden to date anyone, but my Bhabhi, for the rest of his life. But, the happiness on my cousin’s countenance was enough to convey how happy he was to take vows with Bhabhi.
“The Great Gujju Wedding” had “The Great Gujju Garba night” on the previous eve. I got an opportunity to take charge of the eventful night, as an anchor, playing host to a crowd of sweet hearted Gujjus. I call them sweet because they laughed at my stupid jokes and cheered the performances, nicely put up by my gang of cousins.
The “Garba Night” started with traditional Garba and in an hour everyone was fully charged. Eventually the disco-beat Garba followed which I never expected to end up in “Fevicol se” & “Chokra Jawan re” because I thought that only happened in Mumbai! It was then when I came in my true ‘spirits’. Please note, ‘spirits’ do not mean, what you think, in Gujarat.
After the energetic ‘Disco-Garba’, my cousins presented breath-taking performances and received thunderous applauds from the audience. Friends of the to-be-wedded couple also presented excellent performances, leaving the audience enthralled. My personal favourite was the wedding couple dance which I found cute! Now, when I find something cute, it actually is. Unlike those girls who find the burly moustache of my college watchman cute.
Next day was “The Great Gujju Wedding” day. I believed that one cannot keep smiling through 100 clicks by a photographer. But, my credence was dazed when I observed that my Cousin Brother can’t stop smiling. How happy he was!! God bless the couple.
So, after a series of photography sessions, we progressed to facilitate my cousin to ride a Mare (Female horse). My cousin, obviously, was riding a Mare was the first time and was nervous. I dared my cousin to move a muscle while sitting on the Mare. But, he did not, even after we raised the stakes to a 1000 bucks. Dancing enthusiastically in the ‘Jaan’, we finally reached the marriage venue. It was beautifully decorated and I would have told the name of the venue. But, alas, I do not get any royalty to mention the name. Bad luck, venue.
There were nicely dressed waiters who welcomed us and offered drinks, again non-alcoholic. We cousins gobbled the starters and started planning how to get hold of my cousin’s ‘Jutti’. Unlike the movie ‘Hum Aapke Hai Kaun’, there were no beautiful girls trying to negotiate with us for the ‘Jutti’.
Anyways, finally we witnessed all the ceremonies of “The Great Gujju Wedding” and all ended well. I am not going to describe the ceremonies as you all will sleep reading.
Before going to the wedding, I was contemplating to become a wedding photographer. But now, I think a wedding photographer is that poor soul, who has to click pictures of the delicious food, when we are busy devouring the same.
God bless the newly wedded couple, may The Almighty bring all the happiness in the world for you. Looking forward to the next wedding where I will again spend good time with my big “Gujju” family. J
