Steeped in history and mystery, Brahmagiri peak has stories galore that you can share with friends on that pit stop where you pause to catch your breath. According to legends, the mountain derives its name from a temple that lies on the Kerala side of the range. This temple is said to have been constructed by Lord Brahma himself. Munikal cave is a mysterious ravine where ancient rishis are said to have meditated during ancient times. The caves are called ‘Pakshipathalam’ when you approach Brahmagiri from the Kerala side which literally means birds from the underworld of demons. The site is rich in bird diversity, and some rare species have been spotted over the years, which could be a possible explanation for its name.

Mythology has it that the river Lakshmana Thirtha was formed when Lakshmana shot an arrow into the Brahmagiri to quench Rama’s and his thirst during their travels in search of Sita. Rama is also said to have built a Shiva temple on the banks of this river that eventually flows into the Cauvery.
