Maldives is a spectacular location, most famous for the pristine beaches and amazing landscapes. Here, I have listed 5 things you can indulge in while visiting Maldives!
You can also consider booking one of these Maldives packages which can help you in planning.
- Plan your travel so that you reach during the day
The thing to remember about Maldives is that it’s a bunch of tiny islands with Male being the one accessible from various locations. Your journey would continue from Male to the Island on which your resort is. The modes of transport are either a Sea Plane or a Speed Boat, both of which function only during the day. Unless you want to spend a few days in Male (which I don’t recommend) you should try to plan your journey so that you reach Male sometime during the day. If it isn’t possible then you have the option of spending the night at the airport or taking up a hotel in Male for the night.
- Take the sea plane to your resort
As mentioned, of the two modes of transport available to your island the sea plane is definitely the better option. It is more expensive than the speed boat but the experience is completely worth it. The transport is usually arranged by the hotel and is included in the package by them. To try to arrange for it on your own is a difficult and costly affair. From the Male airport you are taken to a terminal of sorts from where the sea planes depart. It’s a small private aircraft just like you see in the movies and certainly makes you feel like a star. It is usually a half hour or one hour ride from Male to your hotel/resort and once you reach there you are stuck there for the rest of your trip so choose wisely. Since the transit to the resort is so expensive you land up spending the entire vacation on that one island which turns out to actually be a good thing.
- Go snorkeling even if you do not know swimming
Resorts have snorkeling gear, life jackets etc which they rent out on a per day basis. If you are a non-swimmer and scared of the water then throw on a life jacket and go because the water is barely 5ft deep around the resorts. Further away from the coral islands you would meet the ocean which is very visible by the change in the colour of the water hence easy to avoid. The resort usually conducts tours which you can join for free as well at certain times during the day. The water is crystal clear and you land up wishing you could stay in forever. Watching the various sea creatures showing off their pretty little coral homes brings a kind of peace that nothing else can. With the noise of the world blocked out of your ears you can empty your mind and only focus on what goes on in Ariel’s land. Even if it’s just for the moment, your fear of the water would certainly melt away.
- Learn swimming so that you can scuba dive with the mantas
We were told that it was not compulsory to know swimming if we wanted to take a manta tour but it is preferred because we would need to venture out into the ocean and swim around after the mantas. This would require a certain level of comfort when in the water which is why we gave it a skip. We did however see smaller versions of it while sitting by the beach. There are a number of other tours and activities as well that the resorts have for their guests such as fishing, spa, yoga etc.
- Do Nothing
Take a stroll on the beach and sit there by night. A few land and sea creatures would keep you company while you star gaze from what would feel like the edge of the earth.
