Thimpu Handicrafts Market, Bhutan

Thimpu is the capital of the happiest country in the world, Bhutan. There is no traffic, no honking noise and no pollution. Makes Thimpu the perfect city to retire in! Doesn’t it? The people in Thimpu are very sweet. They are busy leading a happy and content life. I experienced their hospitality when I was in Thimpu during my Bhutan trip and it was impeccable. However, we found it difficult to find authentic Indian food in and around Thimpu.

In the evening, when we were just admiring the Bhutan Culture in Thimpu, we came across a market which looked quite fascinating. The ladies in our group were ecstatic and lead us to explore the Thimpu Handicrafts market. The market was called “ABC” which stands for “Authentic Bhutanese Crafts”. We decided to spend some time in the market and we did not repent it. Below is an image gallery of the Thimpu market.

In Bhutan, the king is respected a lot. The king has a beautiful queen and the couple is considered to be worthy of abundant respect. We noticed the display of respect not only in the market. But, also in hotels or restaurants we visited. If you explore the gallery above, you will notice that there are badges and images, representing the royal couple, being sold in the market.

Another very prominent observation was that models of male genitals were being sold openly. In Bhutan, displaying models or paintings depicting male genitals are believed to bring peace and good-luck to the household. It was shocking at first. But then we noticed how the Bhutanese people were mature about it.

The Thimpu market was very good when it came to range of products available or affordability. The shop owners always welcomed with a smile and when we tried to bargain, they refused with a gentle smile.

Hope you enjoyed the image gallery. Comments are welcome! 🙂

Bhutan is indeed a beautiful country, with colourful and striking handicrafts. 🙂 And all the phallus paintings and wooden models really surprised me, as well, but when I got to the Fertility Temple (Chimi Lhakhang), I figured where they were coming from. 🙂
