Money saving tips for Europe – How to plan for Europe in a cost effective way

Going to Europe is something which almost every traveller has in bucket list. The rich cultural heritage, the splendour of spring, the pompousness of festivals, the thrill of adventure and the merry folks make Europe a perfect destination for any kind of traveller. Due to the influx of tourists, the tourism industry has flourished and led to myriad options for hostels, hotels, tours etc. Here, I have compiled some best tips which can help you plan for Europe in the most cost effective way.

1) Choose the shoulder season

What is a shoulder season? A shoulder season is between the high and off season. For Europe, summer is considered to be the perfect time for traveling, given the flourishing beauty. June to August is the high season for this continent. The shoulder season follows right after it and exudes almost the same charm, at a lesser cost. September might just be the perfect time to plan Europe. It is not crowded, hot or expensive during this time. Step in October-mid and you will start feeling the wrath of winter in Europe. But, September can be the best bet to save money and explore Europe.

2) Start booking hostels 2-3 months in advance

Some of you might be good planners but, many believe in being spontaneous. Reaching at the destination and booking a hostel can be exciting, but you might not avail the best deal in town. There are some really great hostels in Europe. Some have magnificent terrace views whilst some are famous for a great social vibe. You might not get accommodation in these hot hostels at a decent price if you decide to book spontaneously. They tend to get booked in advance and the spot price might burn a hole in your pocket. So, it’s better to scout for these hostels much in advance. Get the best deal at the best price!

3) Keep an eye on the news

International news have a great impact on global currencies. A political move or a diplomatic step can result in Euro currency plummeting or shooting through the roof. Recently, based on Brexit verdict, Euro currency tumbled by 3-4 points. Brexit was announced on 23rd June and before that, on 22nd June, 1 Euro to INR was around 76. One month after the news, it is 73 right now.

You might think that how much difference would a couple of points up or down make. Have a look at the Euro vs INR chart below, courtesy XE.com

Euro

If you consider the past 1 year (July’15 – July’16), the highest value of Euro was 78 and lowest, 69. Let’s see how much difference this can make.

Let’s assume you are going to Europe for 1 month. Other cost assumptions are as mentioned below

1 Hostel Night: 25 Euros (750 for a month)

1 Meal: 10 Euros (600 for a month; 2 meals everyday)

1 Euro Rail ticket: 20 Euros (100 for a month; 5 trips)

Based on the above assumption, the total cost will be 1450 Euros. If we calculate the highest Euro value and the lowest, difference when converted in INR would be Rs 13,000 or 175 Euros.

What can 175 Euros get you? 7 extra nights, 17 meals or 8 train tickets in Europe! So, keep an eye on that chart and make sure you get the best deal for your forex.

4) Try hitchhiking and Couchsurfing

Taking lifts and staying with strangers can save lot of money! Well, even if you are not a big fan of experimentation, I would still suggest you to at least use Couchsurfing if not hitchhiking. You will not only save money, but meet interesting locals who can also show you around! Make sure you read their references online and trust your instinct. I am myself an active Couchsurfer and have hosted around 10 travellers. I have also used Couchsurfing as a guest and had a lovely experience. A tip here, don’t wait to use Couchsurfing till you plan your Europe trip. Start hosting travellers in your hometown. This will enable you to meet interesting and inspiring travellers and also add some references in your kitty. If you would like to be hosted by Couchsurfers in Europe, without any references, you might not be hosted at all!

5) Decide which part of Europe to cover

Covering the entire continent might not be possible in 1 month. You might like to hop from France to Norway and then to Romania. But, they are located in different corners of Europe and you will have to shell out a bomb on trains or flights. Instead, visit Euro-rail’s official website and the pass which suits you best and gives you the best deal.

I hope you find these tips useful. Europe can be covered in a decent budget if you plan well! Have you been to Europe? Let me know your experience with managing cost in comments.
